Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the intervention coordinator at my school, I work with students who are struggling in reading from Kindergarten to 5th grade. I call them my "little college students" and scholars, helping to motivate them to overcome their obstacles. I work with my primary students during our learning academy times, where I group them according to their lowest skill deficit in order to help close their achievement gaps.

"Winning, learning, succeeding; let's soar"!

They are my little owls, and our school motto/mantra is repeated constantly to remind them of their potential and all of the possibilities. "You kept us extra time because we are your favorite group", they have reminded me. I, of course, nod in agreement; they are all my favorites. Working with my struggling owls until they struggle no more, makes all of the work and effort totally worth it.

My Project

Young students often struggle with phonological awareness-a precursor to reading- as well as decoding skills. Teachers often “sneak in” opportunities for kids to learn in the form of games. These folder games will allow my primary students to improve their literacy skills AND have fun at the same time. They will have a chance to work with the literacy folder games, as well with the letter-building rods, with a partner or independently while I provide small group instructional time to others. This way, the learning will never cease for my students. But shhhhh!!! Don’t let them in on my sneaky secret.
