My Students

I teach the only fifth-grade class on the entire island of Wrangell. This year I am teaching 25 amazing students! My students love to learn about the world around them and share about our place, Wrangell, when we collaborate with other classes on Skype. Every year I try to add more place-based lessons in science and social studies so that we can learn even more about our community, island, and state and share it with other classes around the world!

My Project

My 5th Grade Students have independent reading on a daily basis. They choose the books that they want to read and spend time reading them on a daily basis. Every day students share about the book that they are reading during reading roll call. We have frequent book talks which inspire other students to read the books that their peers are reading.

Adding high quality and high interest chapter books to my classroom library has resulted in many more students developing a love for reading!

Students are more likely to read when they have access to a wide variety of good books. The more a child reads books that pique their interest, the better they will get at reading, which often leads to a life long love of reading.

We are the only 5th grade class on an island in Alaska. It is so important for students to learn about the world beyond our island. I want them to learn about other cultures and challenges that face people in other parts of the world. I also want them to develop empathy and be inspired by people who overcome challenges. Through reading students can learn more about the world, develop empathy, and find inspiration to make their dreams happen.
