Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

grit (n): courage and resolve; strength of character.

My students show grit each day when they walk into my classroom.

I greet them with a fist bump at the door and they walk in ready to learn and ready to work hard. Witnessing the grit my students show is humbling and inspirational as a teacher. Some will be the first to graduate high school. Many will be the first in their family to go to college. The climb there isn't easy, but I know all my students will get there.

Our school serves students in grades 5-8 and provides rigorous academics, wonderful teachers, and a safe, structured, and loving environment. Our goal is to prepare students to make it to and through college and our pursuit is relentless. Our students continually rise to the challenge. They are future leaders. They will change the world. I can only hope to have the honor of witnessing it.

My Project

My students love reading. They devour books and are always looking for the next great read. Our school celebrates readers - students become "millionaires" when they read a million words; and attend "crush" parties when they crush their reading goal. We want to keep the love and joy of reading alive by providing students with books that interest them. It's so important that my students have access to new books to grow their reading level, and students have consistently shown that with the right books, they will grow. Some of my students made up to 3 years of reading growth last year simply because they had interesting books to read within their zone of proximal development.

New books will give my students new opportunities.

It will not only allow them to grow but will also allow them to explore new worlds, get lost in new lands, and become completely immersed in an interesting story. My students love reading and love talking about books. Their love of reading is inspiring and I know new books will only allow that love to grow.
