My 2016-2017 third-grade class is a creative, eclectic mix of 20 unique eight-year-old children. My students crave hands-on learning, especially building their knowledge through literacy. These 20 kids come from all different types of backgrounds. Their common denominator and stability are school.
Books are the center of every academic and moral lesson that we learn in my classroom.
No matter where my students come from, I want them engaged and ecstatic about the world of literature around them!
My Project
You will not believe me, but there are TWO libraries at our elementary school! Wait... one is actually a third-grade classroom, MY classroom! That's right, I basically have a self-sustaining library that my current and past students, and other teachers peruse for that "perfect" book.
To me, rich literature is the force that drives a love of learning for all students.
Our day revolves around reading. I pride myself in leading kids to unique books in all different genres. My students discover obscure authors and books they normally would never glance at. When anyone walks through my door, there is no doubt that books have taken over. They are stuffed in every nook and cranny and are pouring out of my book bins and shelves.
I am requesting one medium size bookshelf, one small wire bookshelf, and two sets of nine cubby organizers. I want to use the two sets of cubbies to organize different genres of literature into the corresponding reading levels. The medium bookshelf and small wire shelf will house collections of books from my favorite authors, such as Tomie dePaola and Chris Van Allsburg. I need three fold up floor seats for flexible reading. I would also love to add more nonfiction books that third graders enjoy, such as biographies. Lastly, my teacher chair has had it. It no longer raises or lowers. The back will actually fall down while I am teaching!
My students desperately need a comfortable, more organized, and relaxing environment to escape into the pages of a book. By funding us with books, bookshelves, storage, a computer chair, and flexible seating, I can help grow readers into leaders. I can add the enjoyment back. As a teacher, there is nothing better than watching my students discover the
