My Students

Do you remember reading a book as a child that was so special you had to read it all the time? Students like to choose their own books, but when it comes to finding a just right book for them they don't always find something interesting to them.

My second grade classroom is comprised of 100% military children.

They are 7 and 8 years-old and are striving to develop their reading skills. They are an amazing group of kids who attend school while their parents serve in Afghanistan, recover at the military hospital from their war-inflicted injuries, or complete their duty to our country. They love learning, have fun making EVERYTHING into songs, and find pure joy in all literacy activities. I've had parents tell me that their child who wouldn't pick up a book or want to go to school will even carry around chapter books just so people think they are a reader. I want to provide them with every opportunity to flourish and grow. I owe them at least a year of growth and I know that my efforts and partnership with parents and DonorsChoose will allow me to help these growing readers be readers with great fluency and comprehension! I want them to have the opportunity to learn in a literacy rich environment.

My Project

The books I am requesting will be a huge asset to our classroom. They are sorted by levels. It is very important for children to read books at a level that is appropriate for them. We call this a just right book. The only books we have in our classroom right now that are leveled are in black and white and printed off of the computer. I want these children to be able to grab a just right book, that is engaging to them, so that they can grow exponentially in their reading. These books will allow them to do just that. I would like to continue to grow this library so that the students have more choices when reading. The more engaged they are in what they are reading, the more excited they will get about reading and the more they will ultimately learn.

Donating to this request will be a huge help to my classroom.

In order for kids to get excited about learning and reading they need choice and they need books that are just right for them. The ultimate goal is children that love to read! Please support a leveled library for our classroom.
