My Project
For the past two years, I’ve been able to share a diverse classroom library that offers windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors with two classes of wonderful 4th graders. Now, as I enter into my 3rd year of teaching, I will be departmentalizing! This year I will have the chance to share opportunities to engage with reading with 40 diverse students as their ELA and Social Studies teacher. One way that both my students and I have loved to engage with reading in our classroom is through book clubs. Each year, I lead students through the community driven experience of book clubs. The books that I have collected over the past two years speak to a variety of cultures, experiences, reading levels, and interests. Many of the books that are studied in our fiction book clubs, such as Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet, take a closer look at identity, helping students continue conversations that we have throughout the year.
Over the past few years, I’ve worked to collect the described book club books in order to help my students grow as people, readers, and students; Now that I will be departmentalized, I will need to double this collection and add new ways of reading in order to ensure that each of my readers will have a book to read.
Many of my 4th graders are emerging readers, meaning they are continuing to work on understanding the fundamentals of phonics. The Yoto Players will ensure that my emerging readers are able to access high interest books in a low-pressure way, allowing them to discuss the same books that that their friends are reading.
This project will make sure that the books we are studying are diverse, relevant, and engaging––making such a difference in my students' educational journeys!
