Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th grade Reading & Language Arts in a low-income elementary school hard hit by the recent budget crisis in our area. I specifically teach at-risk students identified as being either Special Education or under-achieving on the FCAT (our state assessment) meaning a score of 1 or 2 in the previous year.

The overwhelming majority of my students are reading below or significantly below grade level. Many see reading as an ongoing struggle, obstacle, and burden. This project is meant to turn these students into READERS and LEADERS by giving them the tools they need to increase their reading abilities as well as providing them a chance to be leaders sharing literature with younger students at our school.

I am asking for a class set (24) of whisper phones for use with this project as well as throughout the year. These hand-free headsets allow the students to "whisper" into the mouthpiece and clearly hear themselves as they read. Additionally, I am requesting literature response bookmarks to help students interact and respond to what they read. Finally, I am hoping to receive a set of read-aloud books (4 copies each of 5 books) with a cassette. These are the books that my students will be reading with the younger students. They will have the chance to read, whisper, listen, and respond to these books before confidently sharing with their youngster reader.

You will be a part of making a group of struggling and at-risk students feel like READERS and LEADERS! Help build their confidence by giving them the materials they need to strengthen their reading and share their new found love of literacy with younger students who are just beginning on the journey of reading.
