Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 6-8th grade students in two bridge 12-1-1 classrooms at a Title I school. One class is 6/7 grade and the other 7/8. The majority of students are Latino and African American males. All are struggling readers. 92% are reading 3 to 4 levels below grade. Many live in homes without the financial resources for independent reading books.

Despite their reading levels and the stereotypes about males in self contained classes, some of my students truly enjoy reading.

They want to talk about their books, draw new characters for their stories and perform skits based on what they have read.

Some students read not just to do class or homework, but for the joy it brings and the escape it provides. Recently, at the end of a reading period, four students waited excitedly for the class librarian to sign out their books to read at home before the late bell rang.

My Project

The students’ reading levels and academic vocabulary will increase because they are reading more often and reading books they enjoy. The goal is for 30% of the students to increase their reading level by one grade.

Moreover, these books will help grow our classroom library.

They will be used for independent reading and small group reading assignments. Students will have a choice of contemporary literature that is culturally relevant, accessible, and enjoyable. Therefore, my students will be more motivated and engaged in reading.

In short, these books can help my students become better readers, lifelong learners and instill a love of reading.
