My Students

Imagine the despair and embarrassment of leaving the library empty handed because there was not a book there that could be read successfully. High interest, low level readability titles will provide students with relevant, meaningful books that can be read with confidence, pride and joy.

An eclectic mix of students attend our Title One International Baccalaureate campus.

Socioeconomic backgrounds range from the children of professional parents and international military parents, to inner-city and high poverty families where there may be only a single parent or no adult guardian. Reading levels range from college level to special education students who may have a second grade readability. There is a large population of students across the board who have difficulty reading high school level texts or who have print impairments of some kind. Being the smallest high school campus of three in our district, the campus financial budget allotments are small. The current economy has made those allotments even slimmer. Each year it is a struggle to maintain our state ranking as an "Acceptable" high school. Math scores are quite low in some sub-group populations of our students. In order to succeed at math, one has to be able to read.

My Project

Reading is ones passport to the world. We become inspired and motivated by reading. Imagine what it is like for students who cannot read at grade level. Instead of doors being opened to these students at school, it seems like educational doors are slamming shut. I request HIGH (READER)INTEREST/LOW READABILITY TITLES to offer these students an opportunity to read at grade level. Not only will the relevant, modern, meaningful titles like "Adrenaline High, "Bull's Eye," "Charmed," "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner" and more like titles elevate high interest and a true desire to read, it will inspire and propel the desire to learn more! Our students deserve an opportunity to confidently choose that next great book to read. Students will realize that there is so much more to know and experience in today's world. They will find themselves studying with enthusiasm! Math scores will increase in every student population group!! Students will ACHIEVE through literacy motivation!!!

How better to touch a child's life than through literacy motivation .

. . Books place the world at our students' fingertips. Once a student commands their literacy skills, nothing stands in their way to a successful education and the satisfaction of a life-long habit of reading. Reading generates a thirst for more knowledge. Students will realize that their thirst for knowledge empowers them with the ability to plan for their own life successes. Empower our students. They ARE our future!
