My Students

I am the new Reading Lab teacher in a K-8 urban school that supports a diverse community of students - English Language learners, students with various disabilities and students from low income homes. This is the first year students actually want to come to the library to read. Each classroom of students I service has mixed abilities, different needs but they all have one thing in common - a passion for reading and learning with technology. Once the smart board has been turned on it’s like they’re reading for “movie time”. An analysis of the school data revealed that our students in grades 3-5 are unable to read complex texts on the exam. So it’s my vision and goal to ensure that all the students I serve can read once they leave Kindergarten. With this skill they will be able to transfer to the upper grades. I’m building a community of readers by reinforcing phonics, phonemic awareness, reading comprehension and work word through various modalities and the aid of technology. Our students love hands-on, interactive activities as they learn better in groups with various structures in place. We are in the age of technology and I’m happy them embrace it.

My Project

Every child would love the opportunity to read independently at their reading level, practice the reading skill online that is taught in each lesson, play games that they can master the skills and enhance their technology skills while preparing them with the 21st century skills. It hurts my heart to know that our students who exhibit a strong passion for reading and learning are not able to practice these skills at home due to lack of resources and technology. With iPads in the classrooms, the students will be able to realize their passion and read more online books. These tablets will also help the students during small group instruction and guided reading groups while providing them the opportunity to stay on track with their reading assignments through our school’s reading program Myon. In addition our school has an online math program caller Mathletics that supports all students with math fluency and great practice with the math standards and practices. Those students who are struggling and are way below grade level coupled with our English Language learners and students with disabilities, the technology will provide and aid in differentiation of instruction.
