My Project

Dinner is finished, the kitchen is clean, and once again I am working on lesson plans and preparing for my day tomorrow. After twenty-three years I've learned that a teacher's work is never finished. Even after a hard day of teaching, I am sitting here brainstorming ways to be a better teacher and inspire my students. I am a fifth-grade reading teacher and am thrilled to share my project idea with a caring team that has the same passion for reading as I do!

The title of my project is Read to Succeed!

You see, I was a struggling reader when I was younger. I remember always being in the "lowest" reading group. I felt dumb and therefore had a very poor self-esteem. Reading was a true struggle for me and so I avoided it at all costs until a teacher introduced me to a series of books that I could connect with and read! I will never forget the kids of Polk Street School and how Patricia Reily Giff created characters that I could relate to. I felt like I was sitting in Emily Arrow's classroom while reading. I began comprehending and my fluency grew! I want to help kids in the same way!

Part of our daily ELA block includes independent reading. This is where the students select a book on their level, read it independently, and take a reading quiz over their book to check for comprehension. I've already seen a huge difference in their comprehension and fluency. Most importantly I've seen their interest in reading grow!

I need your help though! I have seventy students and not enough books. The more books I have the more opportunities my students will have to read! This is a huge step in helping my students Read to Succeed!
