Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school was initially created by a group of parents unhappy with the public school options in their neighborhood. We strive to maintain a racial, ethnic, and economic mix because we believe integration and equal access benefit everyone. It is now part of a diversity pilot project in NYC and remains committed to making progressive education accessible to all.

This year, I will be teaching first grade for the first time.

My 24 first-graders are a unique cohort because many of them have not been in a school building for the last year and a half. They will be learning the ABCs at the same time they are learning how to be in school. All the kids returning to classrooms this fall will present a wide range of developmental needs, and I want my classroom to be flexible enough to meet them where they're at!

My Project

Something has gone awry in the classroom library I inherited. Most of the picture books have been in the building longer than I have! They are in... good condition, with nary a tare or a missing page. That's a bad sign in a classroom lending library. Our book baskets are full of left-behind books, worthy but unappealing titles that children did not want to take home, misplace, love, and read until they fell apart or disappeared.

We need a library full of books that beg to be borrowed.

Books with illustrations and storylines that remind the kids of their own families and neighborhoods. Books that make them laugh out loud, even on the fifth re-reading. Books that tempt them into the magical worlds of literature, of nonfiction, of poetry.

The titles I have selected are what I call "read-to-me" books for beginning first graders. The text is too complex for them to manage on their own, and that's okay! I have plenty of decodable books to help them develop their phonics skills. What we need now are books for them to curl up with and enjoy alongside a grownup. These toothsome titles will be part of our nightly book-borrowing routine so that every child has the opportunity to go home with books they are excited to read.
