My Students

Do you remember really wanting to enjoy a book without struggling over every word? This is the what students can enjoy through audio books. Nothing can take the place of being read to by a caring and fluent adult, but not all of my students are able to enjoy that luxury.

I am an ESOL endorsed third grade teacher.

The poverty rate at our school is 40% and rising. We have an increasing number of English Language learners each year. Many students ,in my class, are dealing with learning disabilities and ADHD. I teach in a building that is currently overcrowded with an outdated and under-maintained heating and cooling system. With recent budget cuts teachers are being asked to do much more with much less, while class sizes and student needs increase. My district has adopted and is enforcing a new policy this year that eliminates our morning recess to create a longer block of time for literacy. With my current group of high energy third graders, I must work harder than ever to hold my students' attention and keep them engaged. Our families have parents working multiple jobs to make ends meet. A sad result of this is that students receive less support at home with reading and homework. Fewer adults have time to volunteer in the classroom.

My Project

In my classroom our literacy time is divided between small group, whole class, and individual practice. The ability levels in this group span from first grade through sixth. Many students lack the reading skills or endurance to stay focused during independent work. They quickly become discouraged when their own reading fluency and decoding skills interfere with the meaning of the books they read. Grade level and above grade level students still need to listen to models of fluent and expressive reading to base their own fluency on. Having the option of listening to audio books for part of their literacy time keeps students excited about reading. It allows them the opportunity to completely be drawn into a story and focus on literary elements that they are expected to know about without decoding and fluency skills getting in the way. I have a small collection of books and accompanying Cd's, but our cd players need to be replaced and replenished right away

These cd players will help my students access books that they aspire to read while developing fluency and expression.

A fluent, expressive reader has a deeper understanding of what they read and are more likely to enjoy reading for life because they have been able to pursue a passion for books rather than constantly struggle against the limits of their reading skills. CD players reinforce and develop skills that help my students to feel successful and joyful in their daily literacy routine.
