My Students

We love novel studies where each student has his/her own book and can follow along as we read and discuss each chapter. Unfortunately, we aren't able to do this for every novel that we study. It would be wonderful to have enough books for each student to have his/her own copy during class!

My students are 5th graders who attend public school in Oklahoma.

I have a total of 14 boys and 11 girls in my class this year and they are absolutely wonderful! This year's group is kind-hearted and hard-working. They have done a tremendous job at sharing with one another even though it isn't the best case scenario. They don't complain about having to share, or complain about torn pages in the books we read, but I know it would make life much easier for them if they had their own copy.

My Project

The Kid in the Red Jacket is a wonderful story about friendship, tolerance, and challenges kids face being new at school. It's a heart-warming story that I like to read with my class each year. Having a class set of this novel (25 copies) would be a dream come true! In the past, my students have had to share in groups of 3-4 in order to follow along as we read and discuss this wonderful story. It would be so nice for each student to have his/her own copy to follow along and use as a resource when we complete activities that go along with the book. Although I encourage sharing with one another, it is very difficult for 3 sometimes 4 students to look at the same book at the same time. I have purchased a few copies on my own but I am far from having a full class set in good condition.

My project is important because I truly believe that reading is the foundation to all learning.

When students develop a love for reading, their future success in school is bright! Stories like "The Kid in the Red Jacket" are terrific ways to capture students' interest and show them just how much fun reading a book can be!
