My Students

Everyone is a reader; some just haven't found their favorite book yet.

My students are eager learners in Moore, Oklahoma who love to read.

Unfortunately, getting them to read things other than the "popular" book or genre at the time is hard. The only way to expose them to classics and other genres is to read the book with them in a class setting.

My Project

I love to read classics like "Old Yeller" and introduce students to books they would never pick up if we didn't read them together. Once we do read them together, they recognize them as the great novels they are. Being a good reader isn't just about comprehension. There are so many other aspects of reading that I am able to teach with novels, such as author's purpose, characterization, theme, and much more. Opening students' eyes to this is one of the great things about teaching.

With budget cuts in education, class sizes are growing, and I don't have enough novels in my class sets anymore.

With your help, I will be able to add to the class sets I already have, including Tuck Everlasting, Hatchet, and Old Yeller, so that each student is able to have their own copy during class. I'll also be able to introduce a novel, Stargirl, that we haven't read together before.
