Read, Read, Read to Succeed!

Help me give my students the opportunity to read books that interest them where they can relate to and see themselves through the eyes of the characters. We don't give them enough books that are culturally responsive.

My Students

"Reading develops your brain, provides a window into the world around you and helps you do better in all school subjects." Without the ability to read, you can not become successful in school further more become productive citizens in tomorrow's society. Since reading plays an integral role in students' educational life, like helping you with comprehension and the ability to respond to text-dependent and inferential questions, it is imperative that students read on a daily basis to increase your knowledge base and enhance your education.

Being the new Reading Lab teacher in a Pre K-8 urban school that supports a diverse community of students, ELLs, students with various disabilities and students from low income homes, I am accountable to all the students with whom I come into contact.

In order to increase our students' passion for reading, we need books of high interest and readability; we need books that our students want to borrow and read at home. This can only be accomplished with books that maintain their interest levels. I need books from PreK - 5 that are diverse and culturally responsive. This will also help our grade 3-5 students who are taking the NYS ELA.

My Project

Diverse books that are varied and culturally responsive help our scholars see themselves as characters live the lives they are used to. Having a classroom library of books that are high interest and high readability will no doubt inspire and enable scholars to want to read more in order to succeed. In addition, for the firs time I will create a book club where scholars will be able to read during lunch time, borrow books to take home and most importantly enhance their reading skills for success on the state exam. My scholars are very eager to read and learn and this was evident during the pandemic where they all logged on during guided reading and were very eager to compete against each other while pushing to read the most books over the course of the semester.
