My Students

Dick runs. Jane runs. Dick and Jane run. Dick and Jane run for fun. That's preeettty boring huh? It's definitely not exciting for me, so learning to read in that manner cannot be exciting for my students! No way!

My students (and my teachers) are 23 kindergartens who hail from the south-west of Chicago.

We live, work, and play in a small industrial community. My 23 students come from wonderfully diverse backgrounds. From English Language Learners to first generation Americans, culturally rich backgrounds, low-income homes, and families who cherish their child's education. My students are spunky, friendly, sweet, and SUPER excited to learn! I am thrilled how much that they teach me everyday about loving life and working hard. We participate in centers, projects, and lessons together in an effectively differentiated classroom. Our school rocks and works so hard to support us! But, we do lack many necessary tools needed for our success. With 750+ students in our K-6 building, we need a little help from our friends to get the job done. Thanks for thinking about us!

My Project

My vivacious students LOVE to read and are working so hard on learning their letters. However, not even half of my class has attending pre-school. Many of us have a lot of catching up to do, while others are already reading fluently! With the inclusion of Level A books and non-fiction books in my classroom, I will be able to excite students about reading and bridge the gap from letter sounds and sight words to fluid reading. Level A books specifically are SO important because they won't turn students off to reading by being "too" hard. Non-fiction readers ignite a passion for reading with real-life pictures of animals, bugs, and the like. These books also help meet Common Core Standards for non-fiction reading and provide a link to our science curriculum.

You have an opportunity to give my students an exciting introduction to reading - and help them develop as readers for the future!

The inclusion of these book sets on our classroom will have an ever-lasting effect on my students and provide them with one of the most empowering abilities - the power to read.
