Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello, My name is Ms. P. and I am currently starting my 4th year of teaching and I am teaching a phenomenal group of 4th grade scholars.

My fourth graders are a mix of bravado and sensitivity, they are ready to be adults and tackle the big issue, but they still hold onto their childhood innocence and imagination .

I recently had a discussion with my students concerning 9/11 and one of my students expressed his concern that people not associate " terrorist" with a specific group of people. The students listened and then asked him questions about his religion and he gladly shared. It was an amazing experience to watch a group of 4th graders eloquently discuss differences and were open and willing to listen and learn from one another. They then quickly went back to discussing the latest installment of " Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and who had all the books. No longer bothered by the unimportant things and focusing on what mattered to them, curling up and reading a good book.

My Project

My students have a voracious appetite when it comes to reading. They love checking out books from our classroom library to take home and read each night. When given a choice for free time, many of them choose to read a book. Their love of reading has increased each and every year but our library has not grown with them.

I want to continue to support their love of reading and continue to encourage to them read by expanding their library to meet their growing love of reading.

The first week of school, my students have given me list, list of books they begged me to buy to add to the library. The list ranging from biographies to comic books and everything in between. .

This project will be used to support my student's reading and provide them with books in class to practice the learning strategies from our curriculum. It will also allow students who do not have access to books at home or easy access to a public library, the opportunity to be able to check out books that they are interested in to read at home. My students want to read, I don't have to beg them to pick up book, so I am asking for help to ensure they can always find a book to read.
