Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I teach in a Title I where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

They are life long learners with a LOVE for reading!

They have a passion for reading and learning from reading books.

Many of them are being raised in single parent households and/or shelters. These things work against them getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth by making learning fun. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day and how they feel about themselves. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My Project

My current school has a small choice of guided reading books and book club books from which my third grader can choose. By having this project funded, I can provide more options for guided reading and more options for book club books. By offering more options of books topics my students will have more interest and will be able to read more.

I am looking to receive a wide range of leveled books not only to reach my low level students, but also to push my higher level students.

I hate to think that the high students may fall through the cracks just because they do not have resources to use.

By having access to different level books, students will get a wide range of reading and will have time to discuss in small groups and build their comprehension.

In my class there are so many different reading levels that we need a wide range of books to read. Not only will they get both fiction (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and nonfiction texts (I Am Rosa Park), the students will have the opportunity to read these books all year long. I will also be sharing these books with a bridged 12:1 second and third grade class!
