Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What is better than seeing a reluctant reader laughing while reading a book?

My students have finally met some authors that captured their tickle bones and gets them excited about reading.

My students are 86% free reduced lunch, but they have become hooked on reading this year! Every day they spend 45 minutes reading novels in the classroom. The books that are bought in this project will be read during reading time for 45 minutes each day. The students read and talk with their peers about the books. For many students, this is the first time they have read novels in school! I have picked authors that have many titles to hopefully hook students on authors. My goal is that students read these titles with a peer, and then love the authors so much that they choose other books by the author for free reading time too! I also have new refugee students who have no English skills at all. I would like a few kindergarten workbooks to help them learn the alphabet and other basic reading skills.

My Project

I have picked three novel sets that are from authors I know students will love. The students read those sets in class and discuss them with me and their peers. I have also found additional titles by the same author, so that as more students find authors they like, they have a steady supply of just right books! Students will read these books during reading time each day for 45 minutes and discuss the novels with their peers.

Do you remember when you found an author that you loved and couldn't stop reading his or her books?

That is what I hope for each of my students. I want them to have the confidence to read novels and know what they enjoy reading!
