My Students

My Title I school is tucked into a neighborhood. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch as well as a fruit/veggie snack at the end of the school day. Our students are excited to come to school to learn and interact with their friends. As the reading specialist for my school, I interact with each and every student throughout the week. We love to share and discuss books with one another.

From kindergarten through fifth grade, my students are growing their love of reading on a daily basis.

Students often stop to share with me what they are currently reading. In a typical year, they will stop me in the hall to ask if I have another copy of a book they saw a friend reading. They will thank me for providing new and exciting books for their teachers to read aloud. Students in various grade levels will talk and laugh about books we have read as a school. My students' increasing love of books is growing a culture of literacy in our building.

My Project

My students and I have spent this past school year involved in virtual teaching and learning. We are in the process of preparing to reenter our very old school building for full time, in-person instruction in the fall. We realize that next school year will, again, be a very different school year with the continuation of social distancing and masks in our classrooms.

An outdoor learning space will allow my students to get a mask break while still learning to read.

With a canopy and blankets, I can make a shaded spot on the blacktop for my students' learning space. They will each have a foam square to sit on and a lap desk to use for writing. Each student will also have his/her own storage box so that there is no need to share materials. These items will also allow us to spread out when we must work in my classroom since I will no longer be able to seat everyone at my round table. We will also need masks with clear plastic so that students can see proper mouth position when learning new sounds in the classroom. In another unusual school year, we will need more flexible learning spaces.
