Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The power of a good book- it's something that can stay with you for the rest of your life. I am passionate about reading and make it my top goal to show my students the power a good book can have. To accomplish this, our classroom library needs a new infusion of high-interest titles.

Many of my students are first or second generation Americans.

Some are learning to read English for the first time. Others are just turned off to reading because of the difficulties they have with it or their inability to find interesting books. Reading is not a priority in many of their households and many students don't even own a library card. The only exposure they have to reading is in my classroom.

My Project

I have hand selected books which, in my experience, inspire students to read them. The titles are all engaging and are popular choices for the students in my school. I've chosen graphic novels such as Dracula, Bone, and Maximum Ride to appeal to the reluctant readers in my class. For the reluctant girls, I've hand selected romances and teen conflicts to engage their interests and make them hungry to read. These stories have engaging plots which can easily capture a student's interest and show that that reading does not have to be a chore. With these books in my classroom library, I can make independent reading in class a time which students look forward to, instead of one which they try to get through with "fake" reading. With these books, I hope to teach my students that there is a book for everyone and that they can become lifelong readers.

I've seen it in the past when book donations have come in.

Students who rarely complete homework assignments or independent reading will pounce on these new titles and devour them within a day or two.
