My Students

Music and books are special in their own ways. But together, however, they are an unstopabIe force in the music classroom. I love using books to introduce composers, genres and instruments, as well as teach beat, rhythms and singing. The possibilities are endless with each turn of a page!

Our district is passionate about reading and student centered classrooms.

Using literature to teach musical concepts will give the students choice and voice, while also diving deeper into different musical concepts throughout the school year. I strive to bring a variety of musical ideas to my students, while also incorporating what they are learning and doing in their general music classroom. My students love being active learners in music, whether they are singing, moving or playing instruments. Books can introduce, solidify or end a lesson in a fun way. It will never be the same way twice! I owe this all to my students and their amazing imaginations.

My Project

Books help beginning students learn steady beat, rhythms and echo singing. Older students can read, sing, or add instruments to the stories. Ostinatos, small plays and compositions can also help students learn more about music while also improving their reading and language skills. These activities can be done as a class, in groups/partners or alone. Each story will be brought to life through the students' music making and imagination. Several of the books are also about genres and composers. These will be wonderful introductions and supplemental stories to bring to lessons and units throughout the school year.

These books will teach music in a different way.

They will bring music to students in new ways, while also making them active learners. This project will bring more literature into my classroom, allowing me to teach students about world music, famous musicians and famous compositions in our world's musical history. Plus, all of these books have beautiful illustrations! I hope to spark interest in them to keep reading and learn more about music.
