My Students

One of the biggest challenges my students have is resources for reading. I work with students that are struggling readers and need to be inspired by award winning, engaging, leveled books. Resources that are engaging to my students can spark interests and the love of reading.

My students are third, fourth, and fifth graders in an urban, public school with disabilities.

Our classrooms are inclusion classrooms for students with special needs. Differentiated instruction is a normal part of the students' day. Student interests vary between sports, singing, art, fashion design, and nature, but all students are interested in reading. Whether it is on a computer, app, game, magazine, or video, all students share a common interest in wanting to read. My students love to share the happenings in their lives. They are compassionate listeners and respectful of each other's feelings. We work harder than any other student in the class to overcome our disabilities and to try and fit in. Becoming better readers will help overcome many obstacles they face.

My Project

My students want to succeed. Some might say that many of my students will have a difficult time overcoming obstacles in their lives. I believe that my students are more determined, capable and spirited than most. I believe that instilling a love of reading in each of my students is one way to support their success. By picking books that look like their peers' books, but having the ability to read them independently, will help them fall in love with reading. My students will use these books to read independently while in the classroom and guided reading groups. Students will have high-quality, engaging books to read independently or to a staff member. Students will reflect upon their books daily in a guided reading group or in class. Students will get to share their thoughts, questions and listen to those of their peers. It's sole purpose is to provide students with an ongoing opportunity to fall in love with reading.

Donations to this project will improve the lives of the students in my classroom.

This will give them an opportunity to read stories and literature that is grade appropriate but also at an independent reading to build confidence and self worth. Ultimately, my students' lives can change for the better by becoming more engaged in class, confident, and become better readers for the future.
