Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky enough to work with incredibly intelligent, witty, and resilient teenagers from all over the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. My students come from diverse ethnocultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, but attend seven different high schools within one large high school campus in the Bronx. Unfortunately, over the past few years, student library usage had decreased.

As the new campus librarian for the 3,000+ students who share the building, my goal is to change that!

In my last school, I worked with colleagues and students to make our school library one of the most popular and welcoming spaces in the building. Last year, I worked nonstop building my new-to-me campus library into a similar space, where students are excited to find out what's new, check out culturally relevant and diverse books, learn about the world around them, spend time with peers, and explore their creativity.

This year, our physical library space is undergoing renovations so I am working to curate a popup library experience that will travel to students, while maintaining a smaller, mini "library" space that students can visit after school.

My Project

Through Lehman Educational Campus Library, I am working nonstop to create and sustain a culture of reading across the seven schools in the building. The incredible YA author, Mark Oshiro, has been so kind as to offer to visit my students at no cost.

I would like to obtain copies of book "Anger Is a Gift" for students to have signed by Mark Oshiro when he visits.

The book features a gay African-American protagonist who leads his classmates in organizing around a cause that is meaningful to them. Representation matters, and Anger Is a Gift is a powerful affirmation of that truth. An #OwnVoices novel, it has contributed significantly to our library collection so it would be wonderful to provide students with personal copies of the book for the author's visit.

The markers will be added to our growing selection of arts supplies so that any student who is so inclined can create a masterpiece to display during the visit or to gift to the author.
