My Students

My students’ worlds have been turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I teach in a low-income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, and 85% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast, their daily source of nutrition. The school services many students who live in transient shelters. Eighteen percent of our students have special needs and receive special services. My students are finally based in the building.

These students are adjusting to life during a pandemic; They still need to wear masks daily in school.

Classes are closed during a covid outbreak. The road to recovery is social emotional learning and building academic skills while interacting with one another. My students need to rebuild relationships with others. They are mentally stressed. Our school population is comprised of general and special education students. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino, and Arabic.

My Project

I want our students to have a head start in life by building their own personal home libraries. Reading expands their understanding of the world. It is the key to success.

During this stressful time of Covid and classes closing, a book is a great escape; it will help with detoxing from mental stress.

It is the road to wellness.

I want the children to choose a free book. They will begin to read after school and continue at home.

Many families do not have the funds now to buy their children books. It is not a priority. Books help children develop language and listening skills. Maya Angelou once said, “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” Our goal is to provide our after-school students with books to build a path toward a healthy mental state.
