Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

While I haven't started the school year yet, I know the upcoming 3rd graders very well. Having had several students now for the 2nd or even 3rd time (after being my students in Prek and/or kindergarten,) I know this group is something special. You ever have those students that you remember for the rest of your teaching career? The kids names you find that you often refer to and laugh to yourself about over the funny or amazing things they did? That's these kids. These were my first group, the first group that made me realize how challenging, how scary, how incredible teaching can be, and we're lucky to, "meet" again this year.

My Project

Through donorschoose.org, I decided to focus on two areas I feel will allow my students to expand their creativity and provide them with the tools for overall academic and social emotional success--books and art.

By choosing books that are both on level as well as low readability, ALL my students will feel comfortable and excited to immerse themselves in the world of literature.

Due to home life circumstances, many of my students have not been fortunate enough to have books and reading as a part of their lives, so by creating a room that offers multiple opportunities for reading, students will recognize the impact reading can have on their academics as well as their social emotional development.

In turn, I believe their reading will inspire them to become creative in a physical sense, as I plan to put the sketch pads and and canvasses to work. Unfortunately, our school will no longer have a regular art program, and it saddens me to know that so many of my students will lose out on opportunities to show some of their most hidden strengths. Therefore, my goal is to include art in as many ways as possible, interwoven throughout all core subject areas of our day.
