My Project

I'm a Special Education teacher and literacy coach supporting teachers and students in kindergarten through fifth grade in an elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This school is a Title I school, and the majority of the students I support receive free breakfast and lunch.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

Believe it or not, our school building does not have any water fountains! We have water coolers positioned throughout the building, and students use disposable cups to drink. As you can imagine, this creates waste and is a huge reoccurring expense. I am requesting a set of 50 water bottles to help reduce some of this disposable cup waste. We will customize these water bottles with reading-themed messages we already have. Your donation will help students stay hydrated and motivated to read. These water bottles will also help students stay in class and on-task--since the water bottles can be filled and brought to class, there will be less getting up and leaving class to get water from the coolers in the hallway.

We are also requesting gallon-sized Ziploc bags. These bags have tons of use in the classroom, from storing books to keeping snacks fresh!
