My Project

I'm eight months into the school year at a new school. It's safe to say that we are having a great time learning and getting to know each other. We are requesting a collection of books to support reading, reading interests, and comprehension.

It's time to add more diverse books to our library collection.

The importance of representation for my students will allow them to see and reach their greatest potential. It will also provide them with examples of individuals, who look like them, some of who are agents of change.

The importance of representation at such a young age is important for all students, especially my students, because they have not seen much of that in our curriculum as well as classroom library. Books such as Stacey's Extraordinary Words, Marcus Makes it Big, The 1619 Project, and The Year We Learned to Fly will celebrate representation while introducing students to facts in Black history and prominent individuals who look like them.

I hope that students will be able to remember these titles and have a deeper connection to history and a deeper interest in reading.
