My Students

My classroom is home to 26 incredible first graders. Our arts-focused K-8 public school is located in a predominantly low-income and urban community with a large bilingual population, which presents both challenges and opportunities.

My students are incredibly curious, active, quirky, and compassionate, and have diverse interests, backgrounds, and needs.

We spend our days together singing, asking questions, reading, writing, discussing, working with numbers, learning about our world, and striving to make our classroom community more inclusive, supportive, and kind.

My Project

Conversations about social justice and identity happen often in our classroom. My small but mighty first graders have a strong sense of what is right and wrong, and we have deep and critical discussions about big ideas we encounter in fictional stories, studies of historical events, and our daily school life together. As a teacher, I find that the best way to introduce students to challenging topics and concepts is though interactive read aloud and discussion.

We need vivid, frank, and age-appropriate picture books about racial justice, gender equality, environmentalism, labor, immigration, human rights, and stories of historically oppressed peoples including Native Americans, Black Americans, immigrants, and the LGBTQ+ community.

With this new library of social justice read aloud books, plus a document camera for projecting pages onto our Promethean Board, we will be able to learn even more about these big ideas.

“Looking at the past must only be a means of understanding more clearly what and who they are so that they can more wisely build the future.” (Paulo Friere)

These books will help me carefully, thoughtfully, and candidly teach my young students about injustice so that they are equipped and empowered to speak out against it.
