Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are resilient first graders from an urban Title I school. Our school is a K-8 school that exhibits our core values of community, compassion, curiosity, courage and grit daily through our interactions with students, teachers and families.
The joy of reading flourishes in first grade as they gain the confidence to read on their own.
From the way they pick up a book for the first time to the ones who have read the story so many times that the binding begins to wear. As a classroom we create an environment where reading is something to be enjoyed and excited about.
My priority as a first grade teacher is to foster a love of learning and reading in a community where students feel safe to make mistakes and grow from them. To reach this goal, we need materials and supplies that will ensure that all learners who enter my classroom leave with an equitable education, especially in reading, ready to thrive in 2nd grade.
My Project
When students enter our virtual classrooms in the fall it will be a very different feeling. Students will be coming in with trauma. In first grade students start solidifying their identities. One way to support students with their trauma and student identity is by opening windows and having them also see mirrors.
Read alouds can be mirrors for students to see themselves as the characters in the book and windows for them to learn about another identity or culture that they may or may not have knowledge about.
The books in this project were carefully chosen to reflect the community I service as a teacher as well as give them windows to look into the lives of others. I plan to use these books in our read aloud sessions where we spend up to three days reflecting on the characters in the book.
These books will also help support my ELL students with English acquisition through vocabulary. I am also requesting book bags so my students can safely exchange books throughout the weeks we are in distance learning. I want to grow readers and leaders through these read aloud books.
