Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of working at a charter school in the San Fernando Valley that promotes leadership among our students through service-learning projects and studying the contributions of inspirational world leaders.

The student population is reflective of the surrounding community.

It is a low-income school with a high percentage of students that qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of the students are English Language Learners (ELLs). The school offers an inclusive special education program to ensure we are meeting the needs of all students.

In addition to fostering leadership skills in our students, we develop the students' social and emotional skills through the use of animals, such as therapy dogs. The students that I work with are creative, bright, and eager to learn.

My Project

Many of my kindergartners are English Language Learners. I am constantly searching for new ways to engage my students and help them to develop their language skills. Having a listening center in my classroom would help me to achieve this goal. At a listening center, students use headphones to listen to a story while following along in the book. Having access to a listening center will give my kindergartners extra opportunities to be exposed to new vocabulary words and hear books read aloud with appropriate expression and fluency. My students will build on their reading comprehension and be exposed to new genres and books above their reading level.

A listening center will help my students to develop both their critical listening skills and their oral language skills.

Listening to books makes learning a language fun and it is my goal to provide my students with a variety of meaningful experiences and resources to develop their language, as well as foster a love for reading. A listening center will allow students of all different language levels to participate and learn!
