Help Mrs. Bucknam

I teach 1st grade at a low-income school in the Northwest. We are a Title 1 school, with more than 75% of students below the poverty line.

My students have no books at home and a lack of access to the public library. The literacy exposure at school is crucial for their success. Elementary schools and preschools need to foster childrens' conversational and listening skills as they teach them to read and write. Most students in my class don’t have anyone who reads to them at home. This made the Listening Center in my classroom “kids’ favorite corner”. Sadly I only have five books for my students to choose from. They took turns listening to those books over and over again. We need a better Listening Center. First, let’s get some books on CDs.

I am asking for a selection of quality children’s books with CDs for our Listening Center. During Independent Reading time, my students could choose books to read-along with the CDs.

Start young, start early, give them a chance and let them shine. How exciting to watch our 6-year-olds smile when the light bulb turned on.
