Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in an inner city Title I school. About 80% of the students in my school qualify for free lunch. What we lack in resources, we make up for in enthusiasm! I usually have about 23 students and a large range of abilities in one classroom.

My students who are above level have a need to be challenged with additional activities while I work with the rest of the students. They enjoy working independently at centers, rather than just being handed a worksheet with more of the same math problems. Due to severe budget cuts to the education budget, math learning centers is not something that will be funded for the '09-'10 school year.

The math learning centers coincide with the first grade math curriculum. They will benefit my high level students because it will keep them actively engaged while the rest of the class is still working. This keeps the classroom running smoothly, since all children are actively engaged in learning. As the school year progresses, more and more students will be able to avail themselves of the materials.

Your generosity will make it possible for my students to explore everything from measurement to geometry…as they read 8 fun, math-themed storybooks, then complete hands-on activities that extend and reinforce what they’ve learned! Each math center includes a paperback book that targets a specific math concept…plus 5 step-by-step activity cards with reproducibles right on back—allowing kids to create pizza fractions, divide cookies and more! All 8 centers include an answer card and enough manipulative's for 4 students to work at once.
