Help Mrs. Watson

I currently teach in a low income, inner city school with many high needs students. Unfortunately, many students are not privileged enough to have many first hand experiences. Students learn about most new things through school.

How do I build students' comprehension skills, when they don't have experiences or knowledge about many things that they read? They struggle to make connections to situations in which they've never been exposed to. I need materials to help students relate to all of the cool things out there in the world!

I believe by getting more non fiction materials I can help students become aware of the many different environments in the world. I want them to become more well-rounded individuals that display understanding and empathy for others. Of course we can't just expect this to happen without guidance and teaching. These materials will be just what they need. The biography cards do all of the above and go along with our unit that focuses on, "Those Who've Made a Difference." Making connections, makes a stronger education.

By helping fund this project you can help close the gap in education caused by lack of student experiences. You can be the one that proves low-economic does not have to equal low education.
