Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I recently started teaching Middle School Special Education in a Title I-funded school in West Phoenix. My students are ethnically diverse and most of them come from families who have been marginalized because of their race, immigration status, or socioeconomic level. The students that I work with are reading far below grade level. I have excellent materials to teach them reading skills. However, as you can see, my bookshelves are completely empty. I want to create a print-rich environment to foster a joy and excitement for reading. I need to purchase books that are of high interest to adolescents, but lower reading level. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated by myself and my students.
My Project
I teach students who are differently abled. Some have mild intellectual disabilities, physical impairments such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida, speech and language impairments, or attention deficit disorder. My students are significantly behind in reading and therefore I used a structured, phonics program to guide the majority of our instruction. However, I incorporate a listening comprehension piece where I read aloud to the students everyday. This is everybody's favorite part of class. They absolutely love it and we need good quality literature that they can relate to. I want them to be able to see themselves in the stories that we read.
