My Students

I work at a middle school in Flushing, Queens which is in New York. A lot of the students in the school, not just in my class, come from low-income homes, so they can't afford basic supplies. A lot of these students are in charge of taking care of younger siblings, as well as themselves, while their parent(s) or guardian(s) work in order to provide them with food, a roof over their heads and at least some of the supplies they need for school.

Some students come from families where their parents have either neglected them, are in prison, or died; leaving them under the care of an orphanage or homeless shelter.

My Project

Read 180 is a reading intervention program for struggling readers. My students love the program, and it is differentiated and matches their reading level and comprehension skills. They need the headphones with the microphones in order to successfully improve their reading fluency skills, as well as their word recognition skills. The ones they currently have are broken, with wires hanging out of them.

When students are using the program they are able to record their reading of a passage and play it back to hear how their reading sounds.

This helps them improve their reading skills. They are also recording the spelling of vocabulary words. Reading is a daily struggle for most of my students. Read 180 is being used to improve their reading skills, so they can be successful in both school and the real world.
