My Students

My students are awesome kids. I know we all like to think our students are the best, but the students at CMS really are outstanding. Most impressive, though, is how my students are able to overcome adversity to be outstanding.

Approximately 73% of the students in my school receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite having to face the burdens of poverty, my students enjoy having high quality materials while at school, and my goal is to provide them with the best experience possible. We just need a little help to make that possible!

My Project

I have watched my students struggle tremendously since the onset of the pandemic, and I want to implement a project for social-emotional learning (SEL) and engaging families.

The importance of helping our children learn healthy strategies for coping with stress and emotions and the importance of making them feel healthy and whole is more important now during this time of uncertainty than ever.

Our students have had to deal with the loss of loved ones, social life disruptions, the worry and stress associated with their parents losing employment and possibly facing food and housing insecurities, the instability of changing learning formats, and the constant worry of the virus itself.

With this project, my goal is twofold: I want to provide students with notebooks that will be used to create social-emotional learning (SEL) reflection journals and family engagement kits that our students will be able to borrow over weekends.

The notebooks are big enough to hold lots of writing but small enough that they can be taken anywhere. The covers of these notebooks are made of blank brown Kraft paper that students can decorate with stickers and their own words and illustrations. Students are more motivated to write in a notebook they have made their own. Students will create the following sections: Goals, Organization, and Reflective Writing. I will also create an insert with reflective questions that will be attached to the inside cover.

The family engagement kits will be equipped with a movie (DVD) and board or card game of the family's choice, popcorn, and index cards each family member will use to write to each other about the things for which they are grateful. Students will be able to borrow the kits over weekends, which will then be disinfected and "quarantined" before being borrowed again.
