My Project

Reading is a struggle for my students but many have told me that reading is their favorite thing to do. Many also voice their frustrations with reading because they do not have the basic skills necessary to read at grade level, which is getting harder as they enter middle school.

When they step into my classroom, I try to instill that love of reading while giving them the skills needed to succeed.

My classroom has become a safe community where learners are free to ask questions and encouraged to make mistakes. When we correct a mistake, we know we have really learned something! We have so many great discussions about new vocabulary and also to connections we make to the text we read.

My students are in middle school but are reading at a 2nd-4th grade level. They are working on software and reading logs, as well as small group lessons, to help get them to grade level. Software and reading logs get very repetitive and the students don't always have the intrinsic motivation to keep working at a high level of performance.

Celebrations in the form of Doritos and fruit snacks are a huge motivator for my students. They know they need to complete their work, and do it to expected standards, before they can celebrate a job well done. It is amazing what a small treat can do for their motivation and morale!
