My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss

Our school is located in a coastal community.

We have 450 students in grades K-8. My first grade class consists of 17 students. They are an energetic group who love to have books in their hands! When they finish an activity early, they often head straight to the library to read favorites such as the "Elephant and Piggie" series by Mo Willems.

My Project

Our classroom is lacking the materials we need to successfully implement guided reading groups. With sets of leveled non-fiction readers students will be able to receive direct guided reading instruction in small groups. By having multiple copies of the same leveled book, it allows students to keep their copy in their book box. Then, they have to opportunity to reread it each day for fluency, comprehension and to practice their reading strategies. Currently, students are unable to work in guided reading groups because of a lack of leveled reading materials. Guided reading with small groups is the most efficient and effective way to teach students to read. With many students struggling in reading, these material will have a huge impact on their reading success.

When a child struggles in reading it can be very frustrating.

By working in a small group they can find the support they need to reach their goals as a team. In a small group they will be able to help each other by sounding out words together, reminding each other to use certain strategies and give a high five when a classmate is doing a great job! Let's take the frustration out of learning for these students.
