My Students

There is no greater feeling in the world than the satisfaction that comes from enjoying a good book--that is, other than the satisfaction that comes from sharing that book with a friend! My students simply cannot wait to start their very own class book club, but in order to do that, we need books!

My students are a diverse group of bright and enthusiastic young readers from a low-income, urban community.

They have come from all over the world to attend school in the United States, and for many of them, this is the first time they've had the opportunity to attain a high-quality education. They absolutely love to read, and over the past few months, they have voraciously devoured nearly every book in our classroom library! They are dedicated readers and learners, and they are eager to get their hands on some new reading material.

My Project

My kids absolutely adore Barbara Park's books, and they also love the movie How to Eat Fried Worms. Getting not one but THREE brand-new sets of these books would thrill them. I am trying to start a class book club to capitalize on my student's interest in reading and motivate them to view reading as a life-long activity, not just an in-school activity. To do this, I am trying to help the kids conduct their very own book clubs with their peers. However, in order for a student book club to work, we need to have several copies of the same book--something we do not currently have in our classroom. By creating student-run book clubs, my students will be able to take an active role in their own learning. Interacting with books in such a meaningful way and giving them the power to influence their own learning will give my students an incredible sense of self-esteem enable them to become lifelong lovers of reading.

My students' unwavering commitment to learning despite the challenges they face due to economic hardship, disability and language barriers inspires me on a daily basis.

Even in the face of significant challenges, they continue push themselves--and me!--to reach greater and greater heights. By helping us start our book club, you can help my students realize the power of reading, and empower them to reach their highest potential.
