Space explorers need a star to hang on to! I teach in a science lab setting at an elementary school, teaching grades K-5. Among our local residential students, we also have a high percentage of English language learners who choose to be transported to our school to accelerate their learning. In addition to these children, we also have a high population of military families, two special education classrooms, and a variety of students who receive special education assistance in regular classrooms.

Although this is my second year teaching science to my school, this is the first year I have taught any astronomy. I have concentrated on the standards for 3rd and 5th grade in Earth science, and not only found my students to be excited, but got myself hooked in the process! When I polled on whether they wanted to continue with astronomy or go on to a new topic, almost every student wanted to continue the astronomy focus! Although most of our students look forward to coming to the science lab, this was the most enthusiastic I have seen them about one particular topic. This will help develop scientific thinking, discussion of possibilities and theories, how astronomers work, and I can sneak in some practical mathematics as well.

In order to feed our need for information about the universe, we need to arrange for some special sessions of nighttime viewing, as well as equipment that will help aid us in the regular classroom setting. We need a telescope to provide some hands-on experience, and the model that we would like has many features that will help us in finding objects in the sky. We also need the Starry Night planetarium software, DVDs, books, and star finders to help train ourselves in being sky-viewing enthusiasts.

We are very excited about the subject of astronomy, and look forward to making observations of what we have been studying. Please help my students catch a star...or a million!
