My Students

I am a teacher of students with Autism who are amazing! My students are 7-8 years old. The students have unique needs and struggle daily with significant communication and learning needs. They work every day on their life skills, daily living skills, and communication. A few of the students in my classroom are English language learners and come from low-income households. My students enjoy hands-on learning, interactive activities, and sensory play. Most of my students receive an alternative curriculum to accommodate their educational needs. Our class has unique needs, and we often require a lot of visuals. I believe providing my students with a variety of materials and opportunities that support their various abilities and learning styles will enable them to generalize skills, engage socially, and continue to blossom as learners.

My Project

Many of my amazing students come from different countries that why in May 2020 I started my virtual Culture Club. Every week we travel to different countries. During the 6 weeks of summer school, we visited France, Russia, China, India, and Egypt. We learned greeting words in each language, we trace letters in Russian, Arabic, and Chinese language. We explore food, music, clothing, and famous places.

What I’m missing in my classroom are multicultural books and maps!

These books will help me to teach them about culture and history. Some of the books and maps will give them visual understanding of countries and continents. These books will be used for reading out loud and supporting informational learning for my students. These books will immensely helpful to provide information and knowledge to create hands-on projects on different continents and countries of the world. Students will gain a better understanding of their own culture and an appreciation for the culture of others. These books will provide great illustrations about other cultures around the world including beautiful architecture, famous places, traditional clothing, and popular food. Now, more than ever, we need books and maps in the hands of kids to help them become great global citizens. I know my students can reach for the stars!
