Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from a diverse community of low-income families with a majority from immigrant backgrounds. Over half of our students are Hispanic or Latino. We have another quarter of our students who are Arabic speaking.

Our students are high-achieving and focused teenagers who overcome many obstacle in their personal lives to pursue their dream of attending college.

They come from some of the highest concentrations of poverty in Nashville and the surrounding area. Yet, they achieve some of the highest standardized test scores in Nashville public schools.

They are enthusiastic scholars who need the resources to compete with other students around the country and prepare for college acceptance. Our school prepares students to have the confidence, skills, and knowledge necessary to be accepted and to excel in college. They dream of being doctors, engineers, teachers, business leaders, and nurses.

My Project

I teach US and AP US History to low-income and English Language Learner students. Our school does not have a library or extensive reading resources in the building. This year students are taking their first AP exam in May. My project hopes to prepare them to gain college credit by scoring 4s or 5s on the AP US History Exam.

I'm requesting twenty copies of Cracking the AP U.S.

History Exam, and ten copies of The Merriam-Webster Dictionary New Edition. These books will give them the ability to combine class work with their own independent preparation for the AP test.

For many of my students, they will need to earn scholarships to afford the cost of a college education. By earning college credit in high school, they will not only be more competitive when applying to college, but also have to take less credits to graduate once they attend.
