Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine how a kindergartner would feel when being told that the school where he was supposed to have his "First Day of School" has been severely damaged due to Hurricane Harvey and will be closed for the year. Sadly everything is gone! No small group rugs, no reading nooks, no desks, no materials, no supplies! Probably lots of questions are being asked to moms and dads, and many of them haven’t been answered, yet! That’s exactly how many of my students are feeling now after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. They are just ready to get the school year started!

For the past 18 years, I have been honored to work at a Title I school here in Houston, Texas teaching a primarily immigrant community where 99% of our student population receive free breakfast and lunch.

Most of our students come from large low income families and are struggling English speakers. A majority of our students' parents did not get the opportunity to have a higher level of education, some don't even know how to read or write. Many of our students' families incurred great loss due to the hurricane losing their homes

My Project

The materials I requested will have a set place in each corner of my classroom! With these items my students will effortlessly locate materials when rotating from one station to another one. These organizational tools will help them to maintain the resources and activities in order while becoming independent learners. Organization is key for my 5 years old ESL learners who will find the activities and materials in specific areas of the classroom during workstations and rotations. That will allow my students not only to work independently, but to rotate smoothly.

My students must have the opportunity to work independently on each of their language learning skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing!

Organized literacy workstations will allow them to do so helping them to become better readers.

We are requesting a Mobile Listening Center, soft seats, dry-erase boards, activity table, timers, and much more!
