My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? I have been trying to heighten my students' interest in reading all year and it has gotten to the point where the first thing in my classroom every morning is reading.

My students are special education students and at the beginning of the school year were all non-readers.

Through the use of various phonetic programs I am happy to say that they are all currently reading, some are not on grade level but have made significant progress with their reading skills. My school is located in a very economically challenged part of New York City. Books are often left off the shopping list. Ninety-eight percent of the children receive free lunches.

My Project

I would like to give my students books to take home so that they could continue practicing their reading and vocabulary skills over the summer. I have done this for the past several years, that is, allowing my students to take books home from the classroom library to read over the summer. This practice has depleted my classroom library resulting in a shortage of books this year. Some of my students are in the second grade and will be taking the State Tests next school year. I would very much like them to continue reading over the summer. They will be rewarded in September if they read a certain number of books and write at least five sentences about each story.

Reading is very important as it is imperative in all subject areas.

My students are already behind their counterparts so it is most important that they read over the summer holidays. I would like to give them the opportunity to be able to complete this task with the help of a generous donor. Thank you for your help.
