My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? I have been trying to heighten my first grade students' interest in reading all year and it has gotten to the point where the first thing they do upon entering the classroom every morning is to grab a book.

My students are first graders and at the beginning of the school year were all non-readers.

Through the use of various phonetic programs I am happy to say that they are all currently reading. Some are not on grade level but have made significant progress with their reading skills. My school is located in a very economically challenged part of New York City. Books are often left off the shopping list. Ninety-eight percent of the children receive free lunches.

My Project

I would like to give my students books to take home so that they could continue to practice their reading and vocabulary skills over the summer holidays. I have done this for the past several years, allowing my students to take books home from the classroom library to read over the summer. This practice will deplete my classroom library which will result in a shortage of books for the coming school year. I would very much like my students to continue reading over the summer. They will be rewarded in September if they read a certain number of books and write at least five sentences about each story.

Reading is very important as it is imperative in all subject areas.

My students are already behind their counterparts so it is important that they continue to improve their reading skills over the summer holidays to meet the requirements of the Common Core. I would like to give them the opportunity to be able to complete this task with the help of a generous donor. Thank you for your help.
