My Students

Students at my exceptional high school come from all walks of life with a wide range of academic and creative abilities. My students are enrolled in a Foundations in Programming course which is an introduction to basic coding and computer science.

My hope is to encourage students to explore Computer Science at an early age in the hope that they will gravitate towards these much in demand, high paying jobs.

Students at my school are extremely motivated and we have some awesome Career Academies to help give students a taste of different careers. I'd like to see more students think of Computer Science as a future career!

My Project

`We have a 90 minute block schedule, and while it is great to get a full lesson cycle completed, I find that it is too long for my students to remain seated in front of a desktop. I want my students to feel excited and energetic about learning computer science. We just started working on Python programming, and I'd like to introduce my students to the Raspberry Pi to help them make real life connections to computer science.

Computer Science projects using the Raspberry Pi 4 will help my students gain real life experience using programming skills.

These projects and activities will also give my students an opportunity to get up and move around and cultivate healthy habits when it comes time for them to be on the job as future computer scientists.

As I have some students who are younger, they need to opportunity to see a physical output or result when they succeed at an activity. I can see some of my hesitant programmers being motivated to persevere with more challenging computer science courses, if given a chance to incorporate hands on projects. One of our first projects will be to create an LED game using the Raspberry Pi and Python programming. My hope is to see all my students enjoy computer science and see themselves as future computer scientists and programmers.
