Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day, students enter the Maker Shop eager to give their project ideas physical form, and can't wait to begin building and creating. The spark of invention burns most brightly when their ideas can take physical form quickly.

Our school is an incredible mix of students from different backgrounds who all come together to make incredible things in the Maker Shop!

About 60% of our students are Latino and about the same percentage are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Being in the middle of Marin county, there is a middle-class and affluent population as well, making for a truly diverse student body. Students in the Shop Technology, Exploring Technology, and Maker Club programs exercise both the technical and the creative/design parts of their brain to fabricate functional and beautiful creations.

My Project

When a student's idea can take physical form quickly, the student's passion outweighs the frustration inherent in inventing. We try to create a sustainable program where students reuse recycled materials for their inventions, but finding safe ways of cutting cardboard has been a challenge, from scissors that take too much strength to cut to box cutters that have exposed blades. These far safer tools for cutting cardboard will allow students to easily, quickly, and safety build their inventions and project prototypes from recycled materials, moving from idea to physical model to problem solving, all within the attention span of a middle school student.

Innovative student invention is the goal.

Our students have so many great ideas, but few ever materialize. This project will allow students in the Exploring Technology classes, Shop Technology classes, and the Maker Club to cast off the frustration of slow and painful cutting to easily and safely have their ideas take physical form.
