This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In our mainly English speaking school, our bilingual students sometimes feel like fish out of water; thrust into a world were there home language is not the most prevalent language of communication. Even so, they come every day ready for new experiences, and we work to feed that interest.

Coming from a variety of countries including Mexico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Ecuador, our middle school students came to the South Bronx with their parents, and in more than one case, alone, with the dream of a better life.

Not many Americans would think of coming to the South Bronx as a step up the ladder, but we work towards making sure that is the case. In our classroom we provide the opportunity for learning that will help our students realize that dream. Using hands-on activities that give students a real connection to the world as well as stimulate language acquisition, we work together to make our classroom a rich learning environment.

My Project

The materials requested will complete our tank set up for our Trout in the Classroom project. From October through April, the students will help at least 100 brook trout to develop from eggs to fry ( juveniles) before taking them to a stream and setting them free. Brook trout are born in mountain streams where the water is very cold and clean. The water must be kept very cold and the filter will help clean the water as the students use a variety of tools to measure water quality and ensure a safe environment for fish development. Students will learn to use a variety of scientific tools and tests while participating in environmental remediation by increasing the population of brook trout in local streams.

This project brings the real life issue of species loss into the classroom and offers the opportunity for our students to make a difference while learning real scientific tests and tasks.

As well, witnessing the development of an organism from a dependent, helpless egg to a juvenile that is ready to swim in the wild on its own will have a lasting effect on their perspective of life. They, too, will be ready to swim free.
